 Prim K. Tumuramye Growing up, one of my desires was to see myself maturing and getting into the world of independence. The freedom of adulthood looked luringly enticing. If only time would increase its snail-paced movement, I would soon be out of the prison of being a child. Childhood had its joys and pains.   It was always a bitter-sweet pill to swallow. Today you celebrated the joy of having no worries about old peoples’ problems like school fees, complicated relationships turned situationships and tomorrow you were on the receiving end of punishments and reprimands from elders that only seemed to know giving instructions in parables. The African adage that elders are never wrong made the childhood equation even more complex. 2016 will forever be etched in my heart—not because it was easy, but because it was real. After four consecutive years of giving birth (yes, four!), I found myself somewhere between the labor suite and the land of lost identity. My life was a loop of antenatal visits, sleepless nights and diaper duty. I loved being a mother, but let’s just say the motherhood package came with a few surprise add-ons I hadn’t read in the fine print. Then, like a plot twist in a feel-good movie, opportunity knocked. I was among the three students selected for the university exchange program  in Norway as part of our  postgraduate studies. My first instinct? “No way!” The oldest of my three little humans was just four.  But then my husband—bless his brave soul—did the unthinkable. He took a career break to mind the kids so I could rediscover myself and my dreams. Bags packed, I headed to NLA College in Kristiansand, Norway. And oh, what a ride! Lilian Hope Mpiriirwe: You will Be Remembered

  A tribute to a mother, whose life was an open book Mrs. Lilian Mpiriirwe, fondly known as Mwinika, the mother of my friend Comfort has rested. It is a sad and dark morning. Two days ago, her daughter Comfort, whom she called Comfa (the Bakiga have a way for shortening every name) turned 42. Her birthday fell on the day her employer, Uganda Christian University was honouring distinguished staff for excellent service. Comfort was among those recognised for her outstanding contribution to teaching, learning and internship supervision. It was a good day. Their elder brother, Rev. Dr. Jasper Tumuhimbise graduated with a PhD in Education Management this same month.   This morning, her brothers Grant and Alex add another year. Yet the same morning, this family icon transitions to glory. What a month. We have all lost loved ones, and sadly, there never comes a time when we can say we are now used to the ugly grip of death.
